Homeowner's Furnace Maintenance Checklist
DIY Maintenance Between Professional Tune-Ups
While you should have your furnace professionally serviced annually, there are simple maintenance tasks you can do yourself to keep things running smoothly.
Monthly: Check and Replace Your Filter
This is the single most important thing you can do. A dirty filter restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, and can cause overheating. Check monthly, replace every 1-3 months depending on the filter type and household conditions (pets, dust).
Monthly: Check Vents and Registers
Make sure all supply and return vents are open and unblocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Blocked vents cause pressure imbalances that stress your furnace.
Seasonally: Clear the Area Around Your Furnace
Keep at least 3 feet of clearance around your furnace. Don't store boxes, chemicals, or flammable materials nearby. This is both a safety and airflow concern.
Seasonally: Test Your Thermostat
Before heating season, switch to heat mode and set the temperature above the current room temperature. Your furnace should kick on within a few minutes. If not, check batteries and settings before calling a technician.
Annually: Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Test CO detectors monthly and replace batteries annually. Replace the entire unit every 5-7 years. Place detectors on every level of your home and near bedrooms.
What to Leave to the Pros
Never attempt to work on gas lines, electrical connections, the heat exchanger, or internal furnace components. These require licensed professionals with proper tools and training.
